Do not insert copyrighted material into the Slang Database. For example, do not cut and paste definitions from other slang dictionaries on the web or copy content from a physical publication.

Except...

Many of the examples of the Slang Database use excerpts from song lyrics as example sentences. If only a small part of a song or other copyrighted material is copied, this is probably legal under the Fair Use Provision of the Copyright Act.

Academic materials have traditionally relied on the Fair Use Provision to allow criticism, research and teaching of copyrighted material. Below are the four main criteria to determine applicability of the Fair Use Provision:

• The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
• The nature of the copyrighted work
• The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
• The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work
