I'm not from OZ, but I'm pretty sure this refers to the "bush telegraph" i.e. the mysterious ways that news and gossip get passed around in remote places. Not literally smoke signals as once used by American Indians. Comment by: dbeierl   
no, it means that there's nothing to do when you've gone bush but to sit around a campfire and spend time with everyone... like one does with a telly when you're at home. Comment by: suzi
